My experience is that writing for deadlines and assignments doesn't promote a daily writing life. Instead, it creates momentum that often doesn't carry over past the deadline. Or maybe it does, it just never has for me. So I'm curious if graduate school -- that place of deadlines -- can do more. If your graduate program helped foster you as a writer, what in particular worked? If your program didn't, what could it have done differently? I'm thinking mentorship, course design, assignments, writing groups, etc. How did you transition from graduate student to writer? And, finally, how can graduate programs better cultivate the writing life?
